Building the Future – Fermín Vázquez, Spain

TV series about young architects in Europe

Fermín Vázquez builds mainly in Spain and Latin America. Countries where the buildings have to withstand high temperatures. This is why the issue of solar shading is central to his designs. The architect manages to find creative sun shading solutions. Sometimes he wraps buildings in golf-coloured steel nets or covers the façade with colourful glass louvres.

Fermín Vázquez mainly builds in his adopted home of Barcelona and has also worked with the big stars among architects. He realised the Torre Agbar, Barcelona's new landmark, with French architect Jean Nouvel. With the British architect David Chipperfield, he designed the Ciutat de la Justícia – an ensemble of several court buildings, also in Barcelona. What he has learnt from the star architects is to take his time and find unconventional, surprising solutions, which can be seen in his own buildings.
