TV report – the sun island of Greece: Rhodes

Film production for TV – Holiday Islands

With around 300 days of sunshine a year, the island of Rhodes in the Greek Aegean is considered one of the sunniest islands in the Mediterranean. The city of Rhodes on the island of the same name can look back on a history dating back to ancient times. It was declared the island's capital 400 years before the Christian era. The medieval period is still particularly characteristic in terms of architecture. The old town is still completely surrounded by its 4 km long medieval city wall and is bordered on the land side by a 2.5 km long moat.

In 1988, UNESCO declared the entire old town a World Heritage Site. Rhodes Town is located directly by the sea, and its Madraki harbour is one of the region's tourist attractions. One of the seven wonders of the world is said to have stood at the harbour entrance: The Colossus of Rhodes. The city's landmarks can also be found here at the harbour entrance: the statues of Elafos and Elafina. Another defiant landmark of the city: the Grand Master's Palace. It towers over the houses of the old town. The mighty castle was once the centre of power of the Order of St John. Rhodes also has a firm place in Greek mythology. According to legend, the sun god Helion took possession of the rocky island rising from the sea and brought it to life with his warming rays, so that fragrant roses covered Rhodes. Thanks to its exposed location, Lindos is the island's biggest attraction after Rhodes Town. The town is a protected monument. From the entrance to the village, you can reach the centre either on foot or on a donkey.

Basiliscus Film meets archaeologist Vassilis Karabatsos in the old town of Rhodes and we talk to him about its special features, such as the old city walls and the Grand Master's Palace. We visit Mandráki harbour, where the Colossus of Rhodes is said to have stood. We visit the village of Lindos and show you the beach life on Rhodes. We visit Tsambika Beach, around 15 kilometres from Rhodes Town. It is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island.
