TV Report – Fashion Illustrator Mats Gustafson

Illustrations instead of photographs – a film portrait from Stockholm

TV Magazine report from Stockholm for Deutsche Welle

Mats Gustafson's career began in the late seventies, when photography increasingly pushed the classic illustrations published by magazines into the background. He quickly made a name for himself by bucking the trend with his special way of depicting fashion. He works with watercolors and pastels. With his way of drawing fashion, the 61-year-old has revitalized the genre. His clients include international fashion magazines and labels. The artist expresses the essence of garments with just a few brushstrokes. His works have already been shown in international exhibitions, currently at the Millesgarden Museum in Stockholm, which is showing works from 1983 to 2013. After years of relative neglect, fashion illustration is back in vogue.

In Stockholm, our film production meets fashion illustrator Mats Gustafson. He paints beautiful, graceful pictures that are published by major fashion magazines and labels. He is one of the most renowned fashion illustrators of our time. Mats Gustafson has lived in New York for many years, but regularly visits his native Sweden, where our camera team met him and accompanied him for a day.
